Ansys

Who they are

Ansys is one of the largest engineering-simulation vendors in the world — structures, fluids, electromagnetics, optics, embedded software. Synopsys announced its acquisition of Ansys on 16 January 2024 and completed it on 17 July 2025 (~$35B deal; Ansys delisted from Nasdaq), creating a combined silicon-to-systems design company. [Evidence] 1

What they DO have (the steelman)

  • Automotive presence: unquestionable. Ansys acquired Livermore Software Technology (LSTC), creator of LS-DYNA — the de-facto standard automotive crash solver — in 2019 ($775M), and its main European distributor DYNAmore in
  • Automotive crash, battery, ADAS/optics and electrification simulation are core Ansys businesses. Test (a): pass (the study's selection tests: (a) real automotive presence, (b) real moulded thermoplastic-parts capability, (c) concrete, dated AI capability). [Evidence] 23
  • AI capability: among the most concrete in all of CAE. Ansys SimAI, launched 9 January 2024, is a physics-agnostic SaaS that trains on a company's existing simulation results and then predicts performance for new design shapes in minutes, claiming 10–100× speedups; Renault Group was the launch's featured early adopter (an automotive reference, though for upstream design exploration, not moulding). AnsysGPT and the "AI+" add-ons shipped alongside in 2024. Test (c): pass, with dates and a named automotive customer. [Evidence] 45
  • Polymer processing exists at the edges: Ansys Polyflow (now a Fluent workspace) simulates polymer extrusion, blow moulding, thermoforming and fibre spinning — real plastics physics, but die/parison (the hollow melt tube inflated in blow moulding) processes, not the fill/pack/warp cycle of an injection mould. The test they fail: (b) moulded thermoplastic parts

Ansys has no native injection-moulding solver. When injection moulding appears in an Ansys workflow, the moulding physics comes from a third party and Ansys is the host or the downstream consumer:

  • Moldex3D → Ansys: Moldex3D's FEA Interface exports fibre orientation, residual stress and weld-line data from its own moulding simulation into Ansys Mechanical/Workbench for structural analysis. The moulding solver is Moldex3D's — which is why Moldex3D has its own full report in this study and Ansys does not. [Evidence] 8
  • PlanetsX (CYBERNET): a Japanese third-party injection-moulding CAE add-on that runs inside Ansys Workbench (filling, packing, cooling, warp). It is built and sold by Cybernet, not Ansys. [Evidence] 9

For this study's moulded-parts focus, Ansys is therefore a platform other vendors' moulding tools plug into, not a moulding vendor. And its genuine AI has not crossed into moulding either: the SimAI launch material and current product page list crash, external aerodynamics, battery thermal and similar use cases — no documented injection-moulding application of SimAI was found in this research (launch press release: no mention of plastics or moulding at all). What would change our mind

A single well-documented case of SimAI trained on mould-flow simulation results (SimAI is physics-agnostic, so a customer with a Moldex3D or Moldflow result library could in principle do this today), or Ansys acquiring/building a native moulding solver. The first is the one to watch: it would make Ansys the AI layer on top of other vendors' moulding physics — arguably report-worthy. [Inference]
