What they DO have (the steelman — the strongest case for them)

  • Real, published generative-AI design research. Toyota Research Institute (TRI) unveiled a generative-AI vehicle-design technique on June 20, 2023 — text-guided diffusion generation of vehicle concepts with engineering constraints (drag coefficient, chassis dimensions) folded into the generation loop. [Evidence] 1 The underlying papers are public, including "Drag-guided diffusion models for vehicle image generation" (Arechiga, Permenter, Song, Yuan; submitted June 16, 2023) — physics-based guidance added to Stable Diffusion so images minimize predicted drag. [Evidence] 2 This is among the most technically concrete OEM AI-design work anywhere: named authors, arXiv preprints, reproducible method.
  • A citable answer on the production platform. The persistent open item from this study's research — which CAD/PLM does Toyota production engineering actually run? — now has a source: an Elysium customer story (August 10, 2017) states Toyota Motor Corporation "adopts a Two-CAD Strategy with CATIA V5 from Dassault Systèmes and Creo Parametric (Pro/ENGINEER) from PTC as the main CAD systems for product development," linked across every process. [Evidence — vendor case study, 2017-dated]3 The reputed in-house PLM remains unsourced — no citable public document naming it was found; treat as unverified. [Evidence of absence]
  • Woven by Toyota is software-only by its own description: the Arene vehicle software platform, automated driving, Woven City, cloud/AI foundations — no mechanical part design or manufacturing engineering in scope. [Evidence] 4

Why no full report

The TRI work is styling and aerodynamics research from the research arm — image-space concept generation, not part engineering, and nothing connects it to Toyota's production CATIA V5/Creo pipeline, let alone to plastic parts or moulds. No public evidence of AI in Toyota's moulded-parts engineering was found. [Evidence of absence] 1

What would change our mind

TRI-style constrained generation appearing in a production engineering context (3D geometry, not images), or any dated Toyota disclosure of AI/ML in part design, mould-flow or DFM — Toyota's scale means even a pilot would be report-worthy. [Inference]
